Description of Service
TubeUpgrade provides two ways to access and download publicly available YouTube thumbnail images:
Website
Our free web-based tool at https://tubeupgrade.com works by:
- Accepting a YouTube video URL submitted by the user
- Extracting the public video ID from that URL
- Retrieving publicly available thumbnail images from YouTube's public CDN (
img.youtube.com) - Presenting those images to the user with download options
Chrome Extension
Our free Chrome browser extension adds a "Download Thumbnail" button directly to YouTube video pages, Shorts, and live streams. It works by:
- Reading the video ID from the YouTube page URL you are already visiting
- Fetching the thumbnail image directly from YouTube's public CDN on your behalf
- Saving the file to your local device automatically
The extension operates entirely within your browser. It does not send data to TubeUpgrade servers and does not collect any personal information. These Terms of Use apply to your use of the extension in the same way they apply to your use of the website.
We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue either or both products at any time without prior notice. We shall not be liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuance of the service.
Acceptable Use
You may use TubeUpgrade only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. Permitted uses include:
- Personal use — downloading thumbnails from your own YouTube channel for personal archiving or editing
- Research and education — analysing thumbnail design trends, studying visual content strategies, or using thumbnails in educational materials with appropriate attribution
- Creative collaboration — sharing a thumbnail file with a designer, editor, or collaborator who is working on content you own or have rights to
- Non-commercial journalism and commentary — referencing a thumbnail in a review, commentary, or news article where the use qualifies as fair use under applicable law
- Software development — accessing thumbnail URLs for integration into applications or tools, provided the application itself complies with YouTube's Terms of Service and applicable law
Prohibited Activities
The following activities are strictly prohibited when using TubeUpgrade:
Copyright infringement
- Downloading thumbnails from other creators' videos and republishing them without permission
- Using a third-party creator's thumbnail in commercial advertising, merchandise, or paid content without a licence
- Claiming ownership of a thumbnail that you did not create
- Removing or altering copyright notices, watermarks, or attribution from thumbnail images
Automated and abusive access
- Using bots, scrapers, crawlers, or automated scripts to make bulk requests to this service
- Attempting to overload, attack, or disrupt the service or its infrastructure
- Circumventing any technical measures we implement to protect the service
- Reverse engineering or attempting to extract source code from the service
Misuse and illegal activity

- Impersonating another person, creator, or entity
- Transmitting any harmful, offensive, or malicious code through the service
- Using the service in connection with harassment, defamation, or abuse of any individual
Intellectual Property & Copyright
Thumbnail ownership
Thumbnail images available through TubeUpgrade are the intellectual property of their respective creators, copyright holders, or licensors. TubeUpgrade makes no claim of ownership over any thumbnail image. The presence of a thumbnail on this service does not grant you any rights to use that image beyond what is permitted under applicable copyright law or the specific licence granted by the rights holder.
Your responsibility
You are solely responsible for ensuring that your use of any downloaded thumbnail complies with applicable copyright law, YouTube's Terms of Service, and any other relevant agreements. Before using a thumbnail commercially or publicly, you should:
- Confirm you own the rights to the content, or
- Obtain explicit written permission from the original creator, or
- Confirm the use qualifies as fair use, fair dealing, or another statutory exception in your jurisdiction
TubeUpgrade intellectual property
The TubeUpgrade name, logo, website design, source code, and all original content on this website are owned by TubeUpgrade and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, reproduce, or distribute any part of the website without prior written consent.
Third-Party Services
TubeUpgrade interacts with several third-party services to deliver its functionality:
- YouTube / Google LLC — Thumbnail images are served from YouTube's public CDN. Your use of thumbnails is subject to YouTube's Terms of Service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google LLC.
